WHAT IS ATEX
ATEX is an abbreviation for Atmosphere Explosible. ATEX is also the abbreviated name of the European Directive 94/9/EC concerning the placing of explosion-proof electrical and mechanical equipment, components, and protective systems on the market. It came into force on 1 July 2003, and all new equipment and protective systems have been subject to it since that date. The transitional period allowed for the conversion of existing equipment that was manufactured and put into operation before 1 July 2003 expired, with effect from 1 July 2006. This means that such equipment must also be fully compliant with ATEX 94/9/EC from 1 July 2006 onwards. The ATEX directive places responsibility on employers to control or eliminate the risks arising from operations that may contain potentially explosive atmospheres and to ensure that the employees’ workplace is safe. Employers must also be able to demonstrate that they have taken consideration of risk for the overall protection safety measures and must provide evidence of any explosion protection measure that is implemented. In order to verify compliance and the integrity of electrical explosion protection safety equipment and measures, the international standard IEC 60079-17 guides to inspect and maintain all electrical equipment within a hazardous ATEX area.

HAZARDOUS AREA (LOCATION) INSPECTIONS
During a hazardous area (location) inspection, we collate a record of the equipment reference, the hazardous area zone in which it is situated, and its certification.
The hazardous area inspection also highlights any areas of concern to propose recommendations for any necessary corrective action.
Hazardous Area Types of Inspection
Initial Hazardous Area Inspections
Initial inspections are required to ensure that the selected type of protection is appropriate for the hazardous area installation and applies to new installations.
Periodic Hazardous Area Inspections
Periodic inspections should be carried out as part of an inspection regime or routine and apply to existing installations. The purpose of the periodic inspection is to monitor the effects of deterioration or change. The intervals between periodic inspections should not exceed three years.

HAZARDOUS AREA EQUIPMENT INSPECTION
ATEX 95 Equipment Directive and OHS Act EMR Section 9(8)
ATEX 1999/92/EC – ATEX 137 – Workplace Directive
We understand that many companies do not have the necessary understanding or in-house expertise to ensure hazardous area electrical inspection compliance with the workplace directive ATEX 137, and OHS Act (The Occupational Health and Safety Act, Act 85 of 1993) directives which address safety where there is a danger from potentially explosive materials.
Many workplaces may contain or have activities that produce explosive or potentially explosive atmospheres which can be caused by flammable gases, mists or vapours, or by combustible dust.

GRADES OF HAZARDOUS AREA INSPECTIONS:
There are three grades of Hazardous Area Inspections:
Visual Hazardous Area Inspections
Visual hazardous area inspections identify without the use of access equipment or tools, those defects such as missing bolts, which will be apparent to the eye.
Close Hazardous Area Inspections
Close hazardous area inspections encompass aspects covered by a visual inspection, and also identifies those defects, such as loose bolts, which will be apparent only by the use of access equipment, for example, steps (where necessary) and tools. Close inspections do not normally require the enclosure to be opened or the equipment to be de-energised.
Detailed Hazardous Area Inspections
Detailed hazardous area inspections will encompass aspects covered by a close inspection, and also identify those defects such as, loose terminations, which will only be apparent by opening the enclosure and/or using where necessary, tools, and test equipment. These inspections may require the enclosure to be opened, equipment to be de-energised, and dismantling of cable glands where applicable, as per the SANS60079-17/14 Electrical Installations Inspection & Maintenance Standards

HV & LV ELECTRICAL INSPECTION & TESTING
We have experience with all types of Electrical Inspection & Testing, including Periodic Inspection and Testing and Portable Equipment Testing (PET). Our highly trained inspection electricians and engineers are available to assist you in achieving compliance with your legal obligations. Failure to implement a programme of regular electrical inspection and testing can lead to serious consequences, as well as affecting your insurance policies.
LV Periodic Inspection and Testing of Electrical Installations
- Periodic electrical inspection and testing is necessary because all electrical installations deteriorate due to several factors, i.e. damage, wear & tear, corrosion, excessive electrical loading, aging, and environmental influences.
- Legislation requires that electrical installations are maintained in a safe condition and therefore must be periodically inspected and tested. Licensing authorities, public bodies, insurance companies, mortgage lenders, and others may require periodic inspection and testing of electrical installations.
- Periodic Inspection and Testing should be carried out by suitably qualified personnel regularly, at least every 3 years for domestic property, and every 2 years for commercial and industrial properties.
Portable Equipment Testing (PET)
- Portable Equipment Testing ensures that all portable electrical appliances are safely maintained and suitable for the environment in which they are used.
- The IEE Code of Practice for In-Service Inspection and Testing of Equipment sets out the standard to which each appliance is comprehensively tested.
- Our highly trained electricians ensure that all testing and repairs are professionally carried out to the highest of standards.
